Rep. Green Introduces Bill to Sanction Russia for Invasion of Ukraine’s Donbas Region
WASHINGTON–Today, Rep. Mark Green introduced the Restraining Russian Imperialism Act, which will impose sanctions on Russia if the country does not withdraw from Ukraine’s Donbas Region within one year’s time. Russia has become increasingly aggressive and hostile in the region since its invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014. Russia’s continued incursions and military buildup in the Donbas region violates international law and the national sovereignty of Ukraine.
Rep. Green said, “At least 10,000 civilians have died because of Russia’s destructive behavior, and millions more have been displaced from their homes and businesses in the Donbas region. Russia’s actions have destroyed the Donbas economy and created a humanitarian crisis. The U.S. should not tolerate, ignore, or forget Russia's aggressive action in Ukraine. As long as Russia is illegally occupying territory in Ukraine’s Donbas region, the United States must exert as much pressure as possible.”
“The only action oppressive regimes understand is strength. If Russia does not withdraw its military from the Donbas region in one year, my legislation requires the Biden Administration to level heavy sanctions on individuals and entities involved in the occupation. The United States cannot tolerate Russia’s continued attempts to destabilize Ukraine by funding separatist groups, committing cyber-attacks, and using its military to intimidate the rightful, democratically-elected government of Ukraine.”
