WASHINGTON – Rep. Mark Green was sworn into the 116th United States Congress after taking an oath to uphold the Constitution on the United States House of Representatives floor today. “I was humbled to be on the floor of the People’s House as the representative of Tennessee’s 7th District,” said Rep. Green. “I thank voters for giving me the honor of serving them in our nation’s capital. Together, we will bring Tennessee values – responsibility, integrity and civility – to Washington.” 23 marble relief portraits hang over the gallery doors of the House Chamber, where the swearing in ceremony was held. Each relief portrait depicts historical figures that have contributed to the principles that underlie American law. Hammurabi, Lycurgus and Thomas Jefferson are among those depicted. In the center of the room, Moses hangs facing the Speaker’s chair, reminding the House’s leader of the United States’ Judeo-Christian heritage. “Thousands of years of tradition influence the American legal tradition. It is an honor to be a member of a body that recognizes and carries on that tradition in the 21st Century,” continued Rep. Green. Already, Rep. Green has been distinguished by his new peers as a leader. He was elected president of the incoming Republican freshman class in November. ### |
