After Pushback From Rep. Green, Biden Admin Looks to Restore Funding for Shooting Sports

WASHINGTON—Today, Rep. Mark Green released the following statement after the Department of Education (ED) agreed to work with Congress on restoring funding for extracurricular shooting sports in public schools. This decision comes after criticism from Rep. Green and a bipartisan group of congressional leaders after the department blocked funding for these programs:

Green said, “I’m pleased that the Department of Education is reevaluating its decision to pull funding from public schools for shooting sports. However, it’s disappointing that widespread criticism from both sides of the aisle was the deciding factor for ED to change its mind instead of recognizing the positive impact of these extracurricular sports. While I’m glad to see progress, all this could have been avoided if ED had not overreached by imposing its cultural warfare on our schools and children.”

“This is a win for federalism and our students. The Biden administration cannot overlook the positives that go hand in hand with extracurricular sports. From mental health and physical fitness to respect for conservation, it’s critical we safeguard opportunities for children, not take opportunities away.”
