Rep. Green Introduces SCREEN Act Requiring Hollywood to Disclose Ties to the CCP
WASHINGTON—Today, Rep. Mark Green introduced the Stopping Communist Regimes from Engaging in Edits Now Act (SCREEN Act), which prevents any federal government entity from assisting Hollywood studios in the creation of a film if co-produced with a Chinese company subject to content restrictions imposed by an official of the Chinese Communist Party.
The bill also requires film companies receiving production assistance from the Department of State or the Department of Defense to report previous films that have been substantially edited by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for Chinese domestic consumption. It also ensures Hollywood studios provide written agreements pledging they will not edit their own films at the request of censorship from the Chinese Communist Party.
Green said, “The time is now to take the threat of China seriously. From releasing the coronavirus pandemic on our shores to China’s deception and malign influence around the world, censoring U.S. films to further promote its propaganda is the very last thing we should tolerate from the Chinese Communist Party. It’s absurd to think that Hollywood allows the Chinese Communist Party to shape its content. My common sense bill counters the CCP’s flagrant disregard for our values by demanding transparency on our films they have edited.”
