Slams nonsensical approach by the Biden administration that would close a well-functioning detention facility while simultaneously demanding money for more ICE beds
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) released the following statement in the wake of reports that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), specifically Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will reportedly close its detention facility in Adelanto, California, even amidst a historic number of illegal aliens surging across the Southwest border in recent weeks:
“Law enforcement is all about consequences—when people know there are no consequences for criminal activity, we know what happens. To see the tremendous disrespect for the rule of law, just look at Democrat-run cities around the country. The same pattern holds true for immigration enforcement. Apparently Secretary Mayorkas and the radical, anti-enforcement bureaucrats at ICE who fundamentally oppose the agency’s mission either don’t understand this basic principle—or they simply do not care.
“It is simply absurd for this administration to tell Congress with a straight face that they need hundreds of millions more dollars for more ICE detention space, while simultaneously considering closing a state-of-the-art facility that can hold nearly 2,000 illegal aliens! It is even more ridiculous when one considers that ICE, under Secretary Mayorkas’ leadership, has not even been utilizing all the available beds Congress already paid for. Secretary Mayorkas’ antipathy toward enforcing the law—detaining and removing those here illegally—is clear evidence of his dereliction of duty, and yet more reason why Congress must hold him accountable.”
